Verizon's 'greedy' $2 bill-pay fee (The Week)

New York ? In 2012, the wireless carrier will charge millions of customers $2 a month to pay their bills online. Will this nickel-and-diming backfire?

Verizon confirmed Thursday that starting Jan. 15, it will charge its customers a $2 "convenience fee" every time they make a one-time payment to the wireless carrier online or over the phone. (Customers who pay by mail or who sign up for automatic bill payments won't be charged.) Verizon's customers are not pleased, flooding Twitter and other internet forums with virtual howls of outrage over the "greedy $2 fee," and threats to ditch Verizon for a rival wireless carrier. Similar backlashes have damaged Netflix and Bank of America in recent months, forcing BofA to cancel a proposed $5 monthly debit card fee. Will vociferous protesters get Verizon to back down, too?

Verizon just opened a can of worms: Customers have every reason to be "furious" that the company is trying to slip yet another shady fee into their already crammed bill, says Erika Morphy at?Forbes. And I wouldn't be surprised if the $2 fee gets "shouted down by its critics, much as Bank of America's did." It's not like Verizon engenders "fierce customer loyalty or devotion." In fact, "this could get ugly for Verizon very quickly if consumers start asking themselves other questions about its policies" and fees.
"Verizon is heading for a Bank of America moment"

Like it or not, customers will pay: Verizon is hardly the first company trying to push its customers to sign up for automated bill pay, says Matt Stanford at?Experts Exchange. But despite the "legitimate outrage" over its "bullying" tactics, "the unfortunate reality is that, unless Verizon customers have the available funds to pay an exorbitant early cancellation fee," they won't switch carriers. If Verizon wants its "already handcuffed customers" to surrender another $2 a month, they can.
"An inconvenient fee"

Giving Verizon what it wants is the best revenge: The new $2 fee is "preposterous for a few reasons," not the least of which is that "it almost certainly costs Verizon more to handle your bill if you pay by check/mail," says Kyle Wagner at?Gizmodo. So "those of us who like to give our statement a scan before firing off a wad of currency to Verizon" shouldn't gripe online, we should make Verizon pay, literally, by mailing in our payments. "Let's bury them under a mountain of paper and see how they like that."
"Verizon will charge you extra to pay your bill online"

Selena Gomez: Looking Back On Her Busy 2011

Teen superstar made headlines with her thriving career as a singer, actress.

Selena Gomez will watch the ball drop as one of the many A-listers set to hang out with MTV on New Year's Eve during "NYE in NYC 2012." As one year ends and another begins, it seems like a great time to reflect on the very busy year that the teen superstar and the show's host is bidding a fond farewell to.

When the year kicked off, Gomez was already knee-deep in reports that she was dating pop heartthrob Justin Bieber. And while her love life dominated many of the headlines, her thriving acting and singing career also managed to make a few of its own.

In March, she dropped her single "Who Says," and explained that she wanted to empower fans with the feel-good track. "So I thought it was a sweet message," she explained. "With bullying, with cyberbullying, with all the negativity that is in high school and dealing with things, you're already trying to figure out who you are; it doesn't help when people are constantly trying to tear you down. And I'm dealing with it, of course. I'm going through it as well."

As she continued to prep for her 2011 tour and album release, she also focused on her acting career. In April she dropped her comedy "Monte Carlo." "It's a fun movie about three girls who try to go on a vacation," Gomez said of the big-screen summer romp. "And it ends up being horrible and my character gets mistaken for a British heiress, and they figure, 'What better way to make a horrible vacation amazing than to be a British heiress?' "

She finished filming her Disney show, "Wizards of Waverly Place," in May. And after being briefly hospitalized in June, she was back on the scene with her album When the Sun Goes Down. For her next video for "Love You Like a Love Song," the singer took fans on a wild karaoke-fueled bender through the '80s. She followed up the clip with stints as the VMA pre-show host and then hosted the MTV EMA in November.

Right before the holidays, she released one more video, the party clip for "Hit the Lights." "This one's saying that I'm at the point where I'm having fun with it. I'm not trying to be older. I'm not trying to be younger. I'm trying to explain where I'm at in my life, and I feel like that's what describes it, and having fun with my friends and it was beautiful and it was simple," she told MTV News. "I thought it was nice."

In 2012, she's set to film her "raw" role in the drama "Spring Breakers," and as she looks back on her own 2011 she explained that she felt "humbled" by it all. "I feel like this approach of this year, I wasn't expecting any of the things that happened," she said. "And so I just kind of want to go into the end of this year and the beginning of next year just excited and in a good place and not planning anything."

Club Rome event to honor local golf stars Biershenk, McGirt

Published: Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at 3:15 a.m.
Last Modified: Thursday, December 29, 2011 at 1:52 a.m.

A congratulatory event for local golfers Tommy Biershenk and William McGirt will serve as a fundraiser for the Children Shelter of the Upstate. The event will be held from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday at Club Rome in downtown Spartanburg.

Biershenk, a former Boiling Springs and Clemson standout, earned his PGA Tour card earlier this month at a national qualifying event. McGirt, a Wofford product and longtime friend of Biershenk's, qualified for the PGA Tour for a second consecutive season.

The event will feature a live auction that will benefit the Children Shelter.

The auction will include items donated by musicians Darius Rucker, Colt Ford, and Montgomery Gentry; golfers Fred Couples, Lucas Glover, Jay Haas, Bill Haas, Jonathan Byrd, Stewart Cink and Tommy Gainey; the Wells Fargo Championship; and The Heritage.

Spartanburg-based band Back 9 will provide live music for the event, which is being sponsored by TaylorMade, Southeastern Paper Group, the Chad Pye Law Firm and Adidas.

Fab?s Fabulous Year?Now Doing Over 100,000 Orders A Month

Fab 2011 timelineIn many ways, 2011 was the year of the pivot. One startup that successfully switched gears was Fab, which started the year as a gay social network and ended it a design-oriented e-commerce site. Founder Jason Goldberg created the Fab Timeline slideshow below to illustrate all the changes the company has gone through, from its pivot in February to raising $8 million in July, another $40 million in early December, and growing all along the way. But one slide in particular caught my eye. It shows Fab's order growth shooting up from just above 20,000 orders in July to about 40,000 in September and then jumping to nearly 100,000 in November. Orders in december continues to climb, Goldberg tells me, and the company is on an annualized revenue-run-rate of almost $70 million.

Cancer Survivor Gives Out Blankets, Encouragement To Patients ...

CHICAGO (CBS) ? More than five years now cancer-free, a 24-year-old Chicago woman is now in her fourth year of giving out blankets to hospitalized cancer patients.

As WBBM Newsradio?s Steve Miller reports, Katie Widmar was diagnosed with Hodgkin?s lymphoma when she was 18. A blanket gave her comfort, and now she is giving out hundreds to adult cancer patients.

LISTEN: WBBM Newsradio?s Steve Miller reports

?There?s so many things when you go into the children?s wards. There?s so much for them, and adults, when they?re sick, they need a blankie too,? Widmar said. ?Everyone?s a big kid, especially when you?re sick.?

On Wednesday, Widmar was at the top of the Northwestern Memorial Hospital high-rise building.

In a large corner room with windows on two sides, a young woman, originally from India, sat in a chair. She is battling cancer.

When Widmar came in with a blanket as a gift, the woman shared her thoughts.

?Actually, I was a little bit scared,? she said. But I?m in good hands and I know I?m going to be good.?

This is the fourth year that Katie and her mother ? and other volunteers ? have given blankets to cancer patients.

Dick Frazier?s wife got a blanket from Widmar after she was diagnosed with cancer.

?It just touched us so much,? Frazier said.

Now Frazier is helping make and distribute the blankets at Northwestern. His wife died almost two years ago.

?It does make me feel good. Like I?m doing something in her memory that she would?ve wanted me to do.?

Snow church opens in Bavaria (AP)

MITTERFIRMIANSREUT, Germany ? A church built entirely of ice and snow has opened in Bavaria ? a century after villagers first built a snow church in an act of protest.

The church at Mitterfirmiansreut, near the Czech border, is more than 20 meters (65 feet) in length and boasts a tower. It's made up of some 1,400 cubic meters (49,000 cubic feet) of snow.

The structure was bathed in blue light as it opened Wednesday evening with a blessing from Dean Kajetan Steinbeisser.

But when the ancestors of today's villagers built the first snow church in 1911, they weren't thinking just of architectural achievement.

Steinbeisser says: "It was meant as an act of provocation ? believers from the village got together and built a snow church because they didn't have a church here."

NASCAR driver Kasey Kahne goes ballistic on Twitter after seeing woman breastfeeding in supermarket

NASCAR superstar Kasey Kahne is getting flak for behaving like a total boob.

A trip to the supermarket on Tuesday became a horrifying experience when the racing champion saw a woman nursing her child near the produce section, reported SportsGrid.com.

At first the 31-year-old thought he was hallucinating.

?Just walking though supermarket,? he tweeted. ?See a mom breast feeding little kid. Took second look because obviously I was seeing things. I wasn?t!?

Once the driver realized that his eyes were not deceiving him, he began to tweet his disgust.

?One boob put away one boob hanging!!? he tweeted.

He then added the hashtag ?nasty? for good measure.

?I don?t feel like shopping or eating anymore,? he continued.

Things got worse for Kahne ? who has nearly 100,000 followers ? when he received a comment he didn?t like.

?I hope someday you have a kid and someone tells your wife that feeding your child looks nasty,? a woman named Deana P. tweeted back. ?Stay classy a**hole.?

Kahne responded ?And your (sic) dumb b***h.?

While the driver deleted the offensive tweets, Deana P. did not.

In fact, the North Minneapolis mother of three saved it for posterity.

?Btw, my husband will be a little bit proud that @kaseykahne called me a dumb b***h.?

Not everyone is amused.

Said one feminist blogger, ?If NASCAR is a family sport, one must assume some of those family members were breastfed.?

Mexico and Cuba Will Welcome Benedict

VATICAN CITY ? Pope Benedict XVI confirmed Dec. 12 that he will visit Cuba and Mexico in March this year.

The Holy Father made the announcement at St. Peter?s Basilica during an evening Mass on the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The Mass marked the bicentenary of the independence of many Latin American nations, including Mexico.

The announcement confirmed remarks Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi made to reporters on Nov. 10, when he noted that the Pope hoped to visit a Spanish-speaking country in the region, Mexico being the largest one. Father Lombardi also identified Cuba as ?another country that really wants to see the Pope,? adding that a papal visit there could offer great encouragement to the people and the country ?in an important period of their history.?

Benedict has made just one visit to Latin America as Pope: In 2007, he visited the Portuguese-speaking nation of Brazil.

The March visit will coincide with the 400th anniversary of the discovery of the image of Our Lady of Charity of Cobre, the patroness of Cuba. That Caribbean nation remains under communist rule, although some minor economic reforms have been announced in recent years.

Meanwhile, Mexico?s Church is grappling with the challenges posed by increasing religious pluralism. According to a recent census reported in the Dec. 13 edition of the Latin American Herald Tribune, more than 1,000 Mexicans left the Catholic Church every day over the last decade, adding up to some 4 million fallen-away Catholics between 2000 and 2010. Catholics are still the vast majority, however, numbering 92.9 million out of a total population of 112 million.

Like the rest of the country, the Catholic Church in Mexico is also affected by drug trafficking. At times, donations are reportedly provided by dubious benefactors, new chapels are built with drug money, and dozens of priests have been transferred, following death threats from drug gangs. Some argue that the Church lacks a formal strategy on how to deal with the cartels.

The Pope views his visit to both countries as important for evangelization, and his trip will take place four years after the Latin American bishops embarked on an intensive effort to advance the New Evangelization in the region. The papal trip is expected to help prepare the entire Church for the Year of Faith, which is scheduled to begin in October 2012.

Speaking to the Register shortly before the announcement, Archbishop Charles Chaput of Philadelphia said the planned visit would be ?very exciting,? not only for Cuba and Mexico, but also for the United States, home to many immigrants from Mexico and Cuba.

?A lot of the leadership of the Hispanic community in Philadelphia is Cubans, so the Holy Father?s visit there will have a special interest to the people of Philadelphia,? he said. ?I think it?s wonderful.?

Critical Time for Cuba

Father Robert Sirico, president of the Acton Institute for the Study of Religion and Liberty, said that regardless of what structural or political changes one might see in Cuba as a result of the Holy Father?s visit, ?the Cuban people will be encouraged by his pastoral concern and the attention of the world focused on the island nation as a result.?

Blessed John Paul II made a historic visit to Cuba in 1998, nine years after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Father Sirico recalled that much of the world?s media covered the Polish Pope?s visit to the island nation until the Monica Lewinski-President Bill Clinton scandal broke during the trip.

?As one who was in Havana at the time, there was a palpable change in the atmosphere knowing that the world?s attention was deflected elsewhere,? Father Sirico remembered.

?Nonetheless, the Cuban people were greatly encouraged, and there was an easing of repression against the Church, at least for a time. In sum, anything that puts the reality of Cuba under the microscope is a good thing, or, to use the words of Blessed John Paul on his visit, ?Let Cuba be open to the world and the world to Cuba.??

The timing of the visit comes at a critical juncture for the Cuban Church. Cardinal Jaime Ortega, the longtime archbishop of Havana, has submitted his resignation in accordance with canon law, and the appointment of his successor is pending.

?Even if that appointment does not come for some time, a visit by the Pope to Cuba will greatly inform his final decision,? Father Sirico said.

The priest suggested that it is ?not inconceivable? that an ailing Fidel Castro, who led the Cuban Revolution in 1959 and ruled the country until 2008, may be gone by the time Pope Benedict arrives there. And even if he were still alive, ?his personal presence will no doubt be attenuated, which is not a small thing in a place where he has been a looming figure for so long.?

Castro?s brother, Raul, who succeeded Fidel as president, is also a communist, but Father Sirico believes he might be ?more willing to face the reality of what socialism has done to Cuba.? Raul Castro has permitted some tentative reforms regarding property rights.

Vatican Outreach

Father Sirico views the current leadership as ?looking for a way out? of economic stagnation. A willingness to reach out to the Vatican may be a sign the communist regime seeks a new approach.

In 2008, Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone visited Cuba, and the Holy See?s ?foreign minister,? Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, traveled there last year.

?A Cuban priest told me when I was there that even some members of the Communist Party had entered an RCIA program and were converting to Catholicism,? Father Sirico said. ?This creates tensions both within the Communist Party, who cannot tolerate any religious commitment, and within the Church, where the faithful may be dubious of the sincerity of these converts.?

Archbishop Chaput said he was ?astonished? that Cuba is still communist. ?The revolution took place a long time ago, and the leadership is still in place,? he said. ?So, we?ll see, in God?s time.?

When the Pope makes his second papal visit to Latin America, he will be less than a month short of his 85th birthday. Archbishop Chaput marveled at the Holy Father?s stamina; when he was still a cardinal, he had suggested that his travel days were over.

?Despite his age, he?s doing that [traveling] in an extraordinary way, very joyously,? he said. ?I?m really happy he?s able to do that. I?m quite surprised because I don?t know when I?m his age whether I?d have that energy, but he?s giving a good example of pastoral availability and love.?

Edward Pentin writes from Rome.

Phillies Shuffle Aging Baseball Cards: Fan Opinion

The Philadelphia Phillies were ousted by the eventual World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Division series. Since then, they have added a top-rated closer and have modestly tweaked their roster.

Will a basic shuffling of their aging baseball cards help the Phillies to make progress in 2012?

Being realistic

The Phillies were widely picked as World Series favorites after signing Texas Rangers free agent pitcher, Cliff Lee to a long-term deal last December. On paper they looked invincible. Reality proved that they were beatable.

The game of baseball involves pitching, defense and hitting. Last season, the Phillies only offered two thirds of that pie on their table. Yes, their offense was good at times. But, it wasn't in the playoffs and that was the main reason why they went home early.

So, general manager Ruben Amaro, Jr. looked at his aging baseball cards and knew that he had to do something before next spring arrived. He picked the option of reshuffling the deck.

Contractual limitations

As of late December, the Phillies had 16 players with guaranteed contracts that totaled $138.5 million. While Citizens Bank Park is a cash cow, it can only offer so much money milk each season.

With that in mind, there are only so many moves that Amaro could make without tearing apart the team. As a result, he completed one necessary acquisition, when he filled the closer's role, added some complimentary guys and re-signed Jimmy Rollins.

New expectations

Inking former Boston Red Sox reliever Jonathan Papelbon isn't a significant risk from a sabermetric standpoint, as he should continue to generate 30 to 40 saves per season. As far as his $50 million+ salary goes, $11 million of it is included in the $138.5 million tally noted above.

This time around, the Phillies didn't need to offer Jim Thome a monster deal to refit his old red pinstriped suit. His $1.25 million deal reincorporates a great baseball guy into a group that will benefit from his positive nature and will also hopefully yield some left-handed lightning in a pinch.

Ty Wigginton ($4 million), Laynce Nix ($1.15 million) and Dontrelle Willis ($850,000) all offer cost-effective roster support. Wigginton may play the role of a utility man around the field, particularly spelling Placido Polanco at third base.

John Mayberry, Jr. has shown promise, but isn't a proven commodity. His 2011 statistical spike may lead to continued growth in 2012, but the production sample size is small and thus Nix was signed as a left-handed compliment for their left-field slot.

In keeping with the theme of versatility, the Phillies now have retooled their bench so that a variety of players can perform at various locations around the field. The undated return of Ryan Howard to the first base area and to the cleanup slot will also allow some of the other names mentioned above to fill-in for him during his absence.

The bottom line

In the end, these moves represent a belief that the core of this team can produce stronger playoff results if it can avoid the injury problems that affected the roster last season.

The amount of currently guaranteed money doesn't include pending 2012 contracts for Cole Hamels and Hunter Pence. These previously created financial obligations have limited what Amaro could have done without moving someone like Victorino who is entering the final year of his contract.

Aegis Secure Key

When you need to transport highly sensitive data, sending it in email or over the Internet may not be such a great idea. Transporting a physical drive holding the encrypted data significantly reduces points of possible exposure. Even so, a determined hacker could attack the decryption software, possibly compromising the data. The fully self-contained Aegis Secure Key ($65 direct) uses an onboard PIN pad rather than relying on software. That $65 price gets you a 4GB unit; 8GB and 16GB devices can be had for $95 and $125 respectively.

Since no software is needed, you can use the drive with any USB-capable device, regardless of the operating system. Windows, Mac OS, Linux?even a proprietary device with a proprietary operating system would be fine as long as it supports USB.

Button-based Configuration
In many ways Aegis Secure Key resembles LOK-IT Secure Flash Drive ($76.25 direct, 4 stars). That's only natural, as both license some basic technology from the same source. Both work with any USB-capable operating system, both use an onboard PIN pad for access, both destroy the stored data after ten bad guesses, and so on. However, there are some significant differences.

The Aegis Secure Key comes with a quick start card that explains how to unlock the key and set your own PIN code; you'll find the full manual stored on the key itself. Red, green, and blue LED lights (powered by a rechargeable battery) turn steadily on or blink in various combinations that reflect the key's status. For example, after you enter the unlock code the green light blinks until you plug the key into a USB port, which you must do within 30 seconds of entering the code.

Where LOK-IT comes without a PIN, Aegis has a default PIN installed at the factory. Before doing anything else with the device, use the quick start card's instructions to unlock the device with that default PIN. Copy the manual PDF from the secure key to local storage on your computer and give it a quick read.

Both devices require a PIN from 7 to 15 digits long without continuous runs of numbers or strings of repeated digits. The buttons on Aegis include letters, like buttons on a phone, allowing users to create alphabetic mnemonics for the PIN.

The unlock process is the same for Aegis and LOK-IT; press the Key button, enter the PIN, press the Key button again. The button sequence for setting a new PIN is also the same.

A rather complex series of button combinations completely resets the drive, wiping out all data and generating a new encryption key. After a reset, you'll have to create a new PIN and format the drive. LOK-IT has no similar feature, though you can force a wipe by entering the wrong PIN ten times. Note that LOK-IT has only six encryption keys; once they've been used up the device is kaput. Aegis can generate any number of encryption keys.

Another advanced Aegis feature is the option to create an Admin PIN. In a business setting the Admin PIN lets management reset a user's lost PIN without losing the data, or recover data after an employee leaves.

There are physical differences too. Aegis comes with a protective sleeve; LOK-IT does not. Aegis is smaller, so it doesn't block a USB port above or below the way LOK-IT can. The membrane keys of the LOK-IT can get marked up by fingernails, leaving clues as to which numbers get pressed during PIN entry; the Aegis's keys are hard and offer click feedback. Aegis is just a bit better all around, yet it costs less.

Weather Underground for Android

Weather Underground for Android

Weather Underground has long been a go-to source for weather information online. And now, finally, we have a proper Weather Underground Android app.

The main view is a nicely laid out three-panel screen.  The top section shows the current temperature, "feels like" temp, wind speed and direction, humidity and a thumbnail image of what it's like outside. Tap it and you'll get the current dewpoint, visibility, pressure (in inches), wind gusts, GPS coordinates, and when the conditions were last updated. Tap it a third time and you'll get a brief forecast for the rest of the week.

The second section, in the middle of the screen, shows three days at a glance, with high/low temperatures and chance of precipitation. You can swipe to get the next three days. Tap a day to get the hourly forecast.

And the bottom section of the main view, taking up a little less than half of the entire screen, is a Google map with nearby personal weather stations reporting the current temperature. Tap the map, and it goes to a full-screen version with radar laid on top. You can adjust the overlays of the "WunderMap," toggling storm tracks, satellite, visible satellite, temperatures, cameras and animation.

Other options include making locations as favorites, seeing sever weather alerts for a location, and signing into your Weather Underground account.

All in all, the Weather Underground app continues Wunderground's penchant for excellent weather information, and it works well enough on Android smartphones and tablets. But the app's animations are fairly laggy, and it doesn't yet have a home screen widget. And while we're just starting the winter season, we'd hope to see a dedicated tropical weather section (if not an entire app from Wunderground) by the start of hurricane season June 1. But, hey, the app's free, and it's quickly found a place on our phones.

We've got download links, hands-on video and more screen shots after the break.

Military Experiments on Fruitcake (Part 2: 1982-4)

This is part 2 of our look at the US military?s tests, conducted at their laboratories in Natick, Massachusetts, during the 1970s and 1980s, on?fruitcake, the time-honored holiday comestible. They issued at least two reports. Here?s a look at their second report:

?Effects of Storage Time and Temperature on Nutritional Content of Fortified Fruitcake? [Final report 1982-1984], Ann Morrill, Mary V. Klicka, Doris E. Sherman, Maureen T. Branagan and Ivy Fossum, report ADA191995, July 1, 1987, 29 pages.

The authors explain:

Fortified fruitcake was accepted by astronauts on Apollo 17 [the last of America's lunar manned missions], permitted on SkyLab as a Christmas treat, included on the Apollo-Soyuz menu, a component of Orbital Flight Test menus, and is available for shuttle flight menu use. Results from earlier storage studies indicated that although fruitcake retained consumer acceptability throughout storage, fortification levels of some nutrients were inappropriate. This report describes the results of a two-year follow-up study on fruitcake with some alterations in nutrient fortification levels?.? Fruitcakes were stored for two years at 4 C and 21 C, and one year at 38 C?.

CONCLUSIONS: Fortified fruitcake is an adequate carrier of vitamin A, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pyridoxine, and vitamin E. It is not adequate for vitamin B12, folacin, and ascorbic acid?.

The authors wish to acknowledge gratefully the contributions of Mrs. Nancy Kelley. Mr. Henry Russell. and Mr. Henry Morgan in the production and packaging of the fruitcake.

(Thanks to investigator Brenton R. Stone for bringing this to our attention.)

Nat Gas ETF: 2012 Energy Comeback Play

The following commentary comes from an independent investor or market observer as part of TheStreet's guest contributor program, which is separate from the company's news coverage.

NEW YORK (ETF Expert) -- Economically sensitive sectors, like energy, failed to generate investor enthusiasm in 2011. Fears of a mammoth depression in Europe, as well as a slowdown in China, hampered share prices of mainstays from Anadarko Petroleum (APC) to Southwestern Energy (SWN). Looking forward, however, there may be reasons to cheer. China has shifted from restrictive fiscal and monetary policies to more accommodative ones. U.S. economic data continue to show modest improvement. Also, European leaders will -- one way or another -- find themselves taking monumental steps to stabilize the region's financial system. These things alone should be enough to boost the prices of undervalued energy corporations. Yet now, there may be a reason to overweight companies that derive a substantial portion of revenues from the exploration, production and exporting of natural gas. In the coming weeks, U.S. officials are set to determine the extent to which American energy firms can export the commodity. Suppliers like Conoco Phillips (COP) are chomping at the bit to profit from markets like Asia, where natural gas prices are 3 to 4 times the price here in the U.S. Can you say: "profit motive!" On the flip side, government regulators worry that natural gas prices might rise precipitously if American energy companies ship away an abundant domestic supply. Of course, most studies (and outcomes) demonstrate that the free market does a better job determining fair market value than intrusive regulatory bodies. Assuming U.S-based energy firms get the green light to export natural gas, one could expect an enormous boost in corporate profits. By extension, when earnings matter to the stock market again, one might want to invest in natural gas producers. Rather than attempt to pick the "nat gas" winner, keep an eye on First Trust ISE Revere Natural Gas (FCG). This fund tracks an equal-weighted index of attractively priced, exchange-listed natural gas producers, including Conoco Phillips, Exxon Mobil (XOM) and Cabot Oil & Gas (COG). The fundamental picture for First Trust ISE Revere Natural Gas, like many equity funds, is exceptional. Whether one is looking at price-to-sales of 1.6, or P/E of 12.5, it's clear that FCG is attractively priced. On the other hand, this exchange-traded stock fund has yet to break through technical resistance levels. At the very least, one would want to see FCG rise above a 50-day moving average. For longer-term confirmation of a bull market uptrend, the current price of FCG would need to eclipse its 200-day trend line. >To order reprints of this article, click here: Reprints

apple and cranberry sauce ...

This is a simple sauce that goes very well with rich meats like goose and duck. You can make it well in advance, so you don?t have to worry about it while you?re cooking lunch. Pop some in a sterilised jar as a lovely home-made Christmas gift that?s sure to impress.

Preheat your oven to 190?C/375?F/gas 5. Place all the ingredients in a wide saucepan and add a splash of water. Put the pan on the heat and bring to the boil. Simmer gently until the cranberries have burst and the apple has softened. Boil down until the mixture thickens slightly, then take off the heat and leave to cool.

Divide between air-tight sterilised jars and give out to all your friends. Once opened, store in the fridge.

Republican candidates: This holiday season, the wives are working overtime.

With the holiday season, and its family themes, in full swing, Republican candidates' spouses are making the rounds on the campaign trail and the airwaves.

In a new ad touting her husband?s Christian values, Anita Perry ? in eye-popping royal blue ? tries to make the case that Rick Perry?s family and American roots are as deep as those of the giant tree towering behind her.

?When Rick?s tour of duty as a captain in the Air Force ended, he returned home to farm with his dad and asked me to marry him,? she says of her high-school sweetheart.

It?s one of several political ads making the rounds this week featuring Republican candidates? wives. And spouses have hit the campaign trail too, chatting with voters as they munch on pizza or practice target shooting.

On Wednesday Mitt Romney tweeted: ?My wife Ann is a remarkable woman ? she has been my biggest champion....? and he included a link to a new ad full of black-and-white photos from their family life. In it, Ann Romney says in part: ?You can never predict what kind of tough decisions are going to come in front of a president?s desk. But ... if you really want to know how a person will operate, look at how they?ve lived their life.?

Newt Gingrich and his wife (she?s decked out in royal blue, too) put out a happy holidays ad Dec. 19, complete with soft music and images of candles aglow. ?Is there anything more inspiring than American towns and neighborhoods brightly lit for the holidays?? says the perfectly quaffed Callista Gingrich. Then candidate Gingrich says that it?s a reminder ?of the fire of freedom that burns bright in the America we love.?

?Campaigns are about policy and character, and the family comes in for the character part,? says Julian Zelizer, a professor of history and public affairs at Princeton University in New Jersey. ?It is a softer side of the campaign, but one that can have a bite in some cases.?

An earlier Romney ad featuring his marriage of 42 years, for instance, is designed to contrast him with Mr. Gingrich, for whom Callista is the third wife ? a relationship that started as an extramarital affair.

Strong earthquakes rattle NZ's Christchurch

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) ? A series of strong earthquakes struck the New Zealand city of Christchurch on Friday, rattling buildings, sending goods tumbling from shelves and prompting terrified holiday shoppers to flee into the streets. There was no tsunami alert issued and the city appeared to have been spared major damage.

One person was injured at a city mall and was taken to a hospital, and four people had to be rescued after being trapped by a rock fall, Christchurch police said in a statement. But there were no immediate reports of serious injuries or widespread damage in the city, which is still recovering from a devastating February earthquake that killed 182 people and destroyed much of the downtown area.

The first 5.8-magnitude quake struck Friday afternoon, 16 miles (26 kilometers) north of Christchurch and 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) deep, the U.S. Geological Survey said. Minutes later, a 5.3-magnitude aftershock hit. About an hour after that, the city was shaken by another 5.8-magnitude temblor, the U.S.G.S. said, though New Zealand's geological agency GNS Science recorded that aftershock as a magnitude-6.0. Both aftershocks were less than 3 miles (5 kilometers) deep.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue an alert.

The city's airport was evacuated after the first quake and all city malls shut down as a precaution.

About 60 people were treated for minor injuries, including fractures, injuries sustained in falls and people with "emotional difficulties," Christchurch St. John Ambulance operations manager Tony Dowell told The Associated Press.

"We have had no significant injuries reported as a result of the earthquakes today," he said.

Warwick Isaacs, demolitions manager for the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority, said most buildings had been evacuated "as an emergency measure." The area has recorded more than 7,000 earthquakes since a magnitude-7.0 quake rocked the city on Sept. 4, 2010. That quake did not cause any deaths.

Rock falls had occurred in one area and there was liquefaction ? when an earthquake forces underground water up through loose soil ? in several places, Isaacs told New Zealand's National Radio.

"There has been quite a lot of stuff falling out of cupboards, off shelves in shops and that sort of thing, again," he said.

Isaacs said his immediate concern was for demolition workers involved in tearing down buildings wrecked in previous quakes.

"It ... started slow then really got going. It was a big swaying one but not as jolting or as violent as in February," Christchurch resident Rita Langley said. "Everyone seems fairly chilled, though the traffic buildup sounds like a beehive that has just been kicked as everyone leaves (the) town (center)."

The shaking was severe in the nearby port town of Lyttelton, the epicenter of the Feb. 22 quake.

"We stayed inside until the shaking stopped. Then most people went out into the street outside," resident Andrew Turner said. "People are emotionally shocked by what happened this afternoon."

Around 26,000 homes were without power in Christchurch, after the shaking tripped switches that cut supplies, Orion energy company CEO Rob Jamieson said.

"We don't seem to have damage to our equipment," he said. "We hope to have power back on to those customers by nightfall."

Hundreds of miles of sewer and fresh water lines have been repaired in the city since the February quake.

One partly demolished building and a vacant house collapsed after Friday's quakes, police said.

Central City Business Association manager Paul Lonsdale said the quakes came at the worst possible time for retailers, with people rushing to finish their Christmas shopping.

Despite the sizable quakes, there was no visible damage in the central business district, where 28 stores have reopened in shipping containers after their buildings were wrecked by the February quake, he said.

"Hopefully tomorrow we'll be feeling a little bit better again and restoring our faith in the will to live and to stay in Christchurch," the city's deputy mayor, Ngaire Button, told National Radio.

Prosecutors not investigating Dutch TV cannibalism (AP)

AMSTERDAM ? Dutch prosecutors are not investigating a case of apparent cannibalism on a Dutch TV show in which presenters appeared to consume tiny pieces of each others' flesh that had been surgically removed.

Amsterdam prosecution spokeswoman Yvonne van der Leede said Thursday no investigation is under way. Thijs Verheij, spokesman for broadcaster BNN, said doctors and others involved in the stunt may have broken laws but police probably have more important things to do. BNN has insisted the case is not a hoax.

The show "Guinea Pigs" aired Wednesday and showed footage of what appeared to be the removal of tissue from a buttock of one presenter and the waist of another. In front of a studio audience, the pair described cooked fatty tissue as rubbery and disgusting, and muscle as indistinguishable from other meat.

Study linking virus and chronic fatigue retracted (AP)

NEW YORK ? A prestigious scientific journal is retracting a controversial 2009 report that linked chronic fatigue syndrome to a virus.

In an unusual move, the journal Science is taking that step on its own. Normally, authors retract their own research papers when serious problems arise after publication.

But Science has lost confidence in the report and the validity of its conclusions, editor-in-chief Bruce Alberts writes in Friday's issue. He said most of the authors have agreed in principle to retract the paper "but they have been unable to agree on the wording of their statement." A retraction signed by all the authors "is unlikely to be forthcoming," Alberts wrote.

Chronic fatigue syndrome is characterized by severe fatigue for at least six months, impaired memory and other symptoms.

The 2009 paper, from scientists at the Whittemore Peterson Institute in Reno, Nev., the Cleveland Clinic and the National Cancer Institute, reported finding a virus called XMRV in blood cells of some patients with chronic fatigue syndrome. That raised hope that a cause of the mysterious illness had been found, although other viral suspects over the years had proven to be false leads.

But follow-up studies found no evidence of such a link. Last May, Science published two reports suggesting the original finding was due to lab contamination.

At the time, Alberts published a statement declaring that the validity of the study was "now seriously in question."

Then in September, the authors retracted some of the data, citing contamination.

In his statement on the full retraction, Alberts said the authors had also acknowledged omitting important information about the study's procedures in an illustration of some lab results.

Robert Silverman of the Cleveland Clinic, one of the paper's 13 authors, said in a statement Thursday that he was pleased by the full retraction. He said he had sought one this summer after finding that blood samples were contaminated.

Through a spokeswoman, another study author, Francis Ruscetti of the cancer institute, declined to comment.

Annette Whittemore, president of the Whittemore institute, said in a statement that her organization remains committed to discovering the roots of the disorder. "It is not the end of the story, rather it is the beginning of our renewed efforts," she said. "We ... look forward to the rigorous review of our scientific research."

A key figure in the research, Judy Mikovits, is no longer with the Whittemore institute.

Wall Street set for lower open as Europe optimism fades (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Stock index futures pointed to a lower open on Wednesday as enthusiasm waned after strong bank demand for the European Central Bank's record funding operation and fears over the debt crisis resurfaced.

Banks borrowed 489 billion euros ($641.08 billion) at the ECB's first-ever offering of three-year funding, boosting optimism that a credit crunch can be averted.

But the optimism faded as European stocks gave back early gains. The FTSEurofirst 300 (.FTEU3) shed 0.3 percent and the eurofell to a session low against the dollar, and German government bonds turned positive on the day. (.EU)

Bunds have fallen in recent days on hopes that banks would use some of the ECB money to buy high-yielding Italian and Spanish debt.

But an Italian banking group said banks wouldn't increase their exposure to sovereign debt even after the ECB offering because European Bank Authority rules discourage it.

"They left it up to each of the banks to do what they need -- there can't be one general plan for all 500 banks they give the money to. So it's up to each bank where to put it most efficiently," said Cort Gwon, Chief Strategist at HudsonView Capital Management in New York.

As the Christmas and New Year holidays approach, equities will likely to become more volatile as volume peters out.

"The market can get whipsawed because of the illiquidity and the headline risk, both ways, both good and bad," said Gwon.

S&P 500 futures fell 2.9 points and were below fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration on the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures lost 13 point, and Nasdaq 100 futures shed 5.75 points.

U.S.-listed shares of Research in Motion Ltd (RIMM.O)(RIM.TO) jumped 8.2 percent to $13.55 in premarket trade after Reuters reported the BlackBerry maker has rebuffed takeover overtures.

Oracle Corp (ORCL.O) slumped 9.9 percent to $26.27 premarket after posting earnings late Tuesday that fell short of Wall Street's forecasts for the first time in a decade.

On the economic front, the National Association of Realtors will release existing home sales for November at 10 a.m. EST (1500 GMT). Economists in a Reuters survey forecast a 5.05 million annualized unit total versus 4.97 million annualized units in October.

Walgreen Co (WAG.N) lost 7 percent to $31.16 premarket after the largest U.S. drugstore chain posted lower quarterly profit on pressured margins.

Contract electronics manufacturer Jabil Circuit Inc (JBL.N) posted first-quarter revenue below estimates and sees lower revenue in the second quarter. Shares fell 4.8 percent to $19 in premarket.

Pope emphasizes human dignity (AP)

VATICAN CITY ? Pope Benedict XVI warned Friday that respect for human dignity "is seriously threatened" by concerns over profit, utility and material possessions.

At a time when the economic crisis is causing a "rising sense of frustration" in society, young people need to be educated on the ethical needs for achieving justice and peace, he said.

The pope expressed his concerns in an annual written message for the church's celebration of its World Day of Peace on Jan. 1, saying "it seems as if a shadow has fallen over our time, preventing us from clearly seeing the light of day."

But he said he is convinced that the young "with their enthusiasm and idealism, can offer new hope to the world."

At the same time, Benedict urged political leaders to give young people "a transparent image of politics as a genuine service to the good of all."

He said that despite "the profession of good intentions, the value of the person, of human dignity and human rights is seriously threatened by the widespread tendency to have recourse exclusively to the criteria of utility, profit and material possessions."

The pope's homily during a New Year's Day Mass will concentrate on the themes in the message.

Justice Dept.: Seattle police used excessive force

Seattle police have engaged in excessive force that violated federal law and the Constitution, the U.S. Justice Department said Friday.

    6. Who came out on top in GOP debate?

An investigation was launched last spring following the fatal shooting of a homeless, Native American woodcarver and other reported use of force used against minority suspects. The investigation was aimed at determining whether Seattle police have a "pattern or practice" of violating civil rights or discriminatory policing, and if so, what they should do to improve.

"Our findings should serve as a foundation to reform the police department and to help restore the community's confidence in fair, just and effective law enforcement. The problems within SPD have been present for many years and will take time to fix," said Thomas E. Perez, assistant attorney general for the civil rights division.

Federal investigators said they found inadequate systems of supervision and oversight, and that officers too quickly resorted to the use of weapons like batons and flashlights. And Seattle officers escalated situations and used unnecessary force when arresting people for minor offenses, according to the Justice Department.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Washington and 34 other community groups called for the inquiry after a Seattle officer shot and killed the woodcarver, John T. Williams, in 2010.

Video from Officer Ian Birk's patrol car showed Williams crossing the street holding a piece of wood and a small knife, and Birk exiting the vehicle to pursue him. Off camera, Birk quickly shouted three times for Williams to drop the knife, then fired five shots. The knife was found folded at the scene, but Birk later maintained Williams had threatened him.

Birk resigned from the force but was not charged. A review board found the shooting unjustified.

Other incidents captured on surveillance or police-cruiser video include officers using an anti-Mexican epithet and stomping on a prone Latino man who was mistakenly thought to be a robbery suspect; an officer kicking a non-resisting black youth in a convenience store; and officers tackling and kicking a black man who showed up in a police evidence room to pick up belongings after he was mistakenly released from jail.

There was no finding that the Seattle Police Department engaged in discriminatory policing, but federal investigators believe this area needs more research.

"The solution to the problems identified within the Seattle Police Department will require strong and consistent leadership along the chain of command, effective training and policies, and vigilant oversight," said Jenny A. Durkan, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Washington, who joined Perez for Friday's announcement.

City Councilman Tim Burgess, head of the Public Safety Committee and a former police officer, said in a statement the findings "confirm what many, including myself, have believed for some time ? our police department can do better."

Burgess said the probe raises concerns about department management.

"Over the past 20 years or so, we have gone through repeated evaluations of police accountability," he said. "Yet, every few years, the same issues resurface."

He said he expected Chief John Diaz to work to fix the problem.

Sgt. Rich O'Neill, the police union president, said in a statement he hoped federal investigators would let the department study the data that led to the critical report.

"Officers are often put in very difficult and dangerous situations and all they want are clear and specific ground rules to guide them when making use of force decisions," he said.
