Ask Engadget: best 'money is no object' laptop?

Image

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is coming to us from Chris, who simply has too much money to blow on a super-laptop. If you're looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

"I sold my business and I want to replace my laptop [HP Pavilion G6] with a completely unreasonably expensive top of the line machine. I want it to do everything I do (gaming, coding, web design) all at the same time. Apart from the fact I need two hard drive bays, I'm completely open-minded, so what should I be buying? Thank you!"

Quell your gnashing teeth, members of the 99 percent, he's done well for himself and now he needs our help. We were able to trick out an Alienware M18x to full capacity for $6,700 -- with an over-clocked 4GHz Intel Core i7 CPU, 32GB of RAM, two 2GB NVIDIA GTX 675M GPUs in SLI mode and 1.2TB of SSD RAID storage. That's the benchmark, folks: who out there can find something more powerful?

Mindless Behavior 'Definitely Unique' Among Boy Bands

'Our Mindless movement is all about being confident, just being yourself,' Battle of the Boy Bands hopefuls tell MTV News.
By Kelly Marino

The first round of MTV News' Battle of the Boy Bands has officially ended, but there is still time for fans to cast their votes for their favorite heartthrob group in hopes to title them the ultimate boy band of all time.

Another group urging their biggest followers to vote for them are the guys from Mindless Behavior. But before you get mindless with your votes, here are some facts about the foursome that might help steer your mind in the right direction:

Highest Chart Achievement
Their single "Mrs. Right" featuring rapper Diggy Simmons reached #8 on the U.S. Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop charts after its 2011 release.

Defining Tune
The guys confess they would travel the world just to find the right kind of girl in the beat-popping hit "Mrs. Right," causing female hearts in every country to flutter.

Standout Video
During their pledge to search high and low for "Mrs. Right," the boys get a lesson or two in geography from their teacher, Professor LL Cool J. Directed by Brett Ratner, the video also features Mike Epps as the school janitor, who joins in on the fun during a pep rally to cheer on Diggy Simmons and the group's signature dance moves.

Debut Album
Their debut album, #1 Girl, hit the U.S. in September 2011, debuting at #7 on the Billboard 200 with 36,000 copies sold in its first week.

Biggest Competition
Despite all of their success, the boys weren't afraid to admit who they thought might be their biggest competition amid the new wave of boy bands that has exploded on the scene. "As far as other boy bands who I feel [are] our biggest competition is One Direction and the Wanted," Roc Royal told us. "That's a huge competition for us, because we all have different movements, and they come from the U.K., and they also have fans out here, which, they have a lot of fans out here, so it's crazy."

So why do the guys think they should win our Battle of the Boys Band? Well, it's simple, really: "There's a lot of boy bands in the poll, but we're definitely unique," Princeton stated. "So please vote for us."

Ray Ray chimed in: "I think we should win the title for Best Boy Band of All Time because we have a great movement. Our Mindless movement is all about being confident, just being yourself, not caring what other people think, stopping all the bullying and, one, we're really great artists. We have songs that anyone can listen to. That's why I think we should win."

"And we love all of the fans," Princeton added.

When it comes to learning the key to becoming a great boy band, the group even filled us in on a little secret the Backstreet Boys once told them while on tour together: "When we were on tour with the Backstreet Boys, the advice that they gave us was 'Stick together no matter what,' " Ray Ray shared. "They said: You might have arguments here and there, but just stick together. You have to become family although you're in a group. You have to literally become family, and you got to stick together."

Voting in round two of MTV's Battle of the Boy Bands runs until noon ET on Monday, April 30. Winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite band made the cut, make sure you keep voting. Tune in to AMTV and MTV Hits for their boy-band video takeovers each day and make sure to spread the word on Twitter using the hashtag #BBB and like us on Facebook for updates!

Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Battle of the Boy Bands interactive bracket!

Tim Cook tells competitors to invent their own stuff ? Apple is not the world?s developer

Apple CEO Tim Cook was asked during Apple's Q2 2012 conference call how he felt about ongoing patent litigation, and whether he might be more open to a settlement or resolution than his predecessor, Steve Jobs might have been. Cooks answer was pretty much the same now as it was before he became CEO -- he doesn't like litigation, but he also doesn't like other companies using what he feels are Apple innovations to sell competing products.

BYD intros dual-mode electric Qin vehicle, Remote Driving key for outside-the-car operation

byd remote driving

The New York Auto Show may be done and over with, but the 2012 Beijing International Auto Show is just hitting its stride. Predictably, BYD is in attendance, and it's got a couple of new gizmos out on the red carpet. For starters, there's the Qin (pronounced "Chin," not Kin), a dual-mode electric vehicle that includes seven percent better efficiency, power and energy-saving in pure EV mode compared to the first generation's F3DM system. All told, the vehicle can scoot some 31 miles on a single 10KWh charge, and in hybrid mode, it can use both its 110KW electric motor and its 1.5 Turbo engine to output some 223KW of power and 440Nm of torque. For the technophiles, the car is also equipped with an intelligent cloud system platform, which incorporates things like "telematics, cloud-computing and a full-range of services 24 hours a day (like roadside assistance, vehicle positioning, remote monitoring, music and video downloads etc.)."

As if that weren't enough, the outfit's showcasing a new Remote Driving Controller for its F3 Plus, which enables owners to perform a variety of driving functions -- moving it forward / back, turning left / right and traveling at a "restricted speed" -- without having the owner inside of the vehicle. Naturally, we're anxiously awaiting a test unit of our own. Or, for a wave of lawsuits -- whichever comes first.

Common environmental contaminant, cadmium, linked to rapid breast cancer cell growth

ScienceDaily (Apr. 23, 2012) ? Studies by researchers at Dominican University of California show that breast cancer cells become increasingly aggressive the longer they are exposed to small concentrations of cadmium, a heavy metal commonly found in cosmetics, food, water and air particles.

The study by Maggie Louie, associate professor of biochemistry, shows exposure to cadmium for prolonged periods of time can cause the progression of breast cancer to become more aggressive. Her findings were presented April 23, at the annual meeting of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, held in conjunction with the Experimental Biology 2012 conference in San Diego.

Breast cancer results from the abnormal growth of the cells in the mammary gland. The normal growth of mammary gland epithelial cells is modulated by the circulating levels of estrogen, a hormone produced by the ovaries. The activity of estrogen is stimulated by the estrogen receptor (ER). Heavy metals such as cadmium can act as endocrine disruptors and mimic estrogen, thereby disrupting the hormone dependent pathways.

While other studies have shown links between acute cadmium exposure and activation of the ER, Louie's study is one of few to focus on chronic cadmium exposure. "The relationship between cancer and chronic exposures at low levels is important to understand because most people are not exposed to high levels of heavy metals, unless they work in manufacturing plants that deal with such metals," Louie said.

She continued: "Unfortunately, cadmium is all around us -- it is in our food, our water, our makeup and our air. Understanding the role that cadmium plays in the progression of breast cancer is extremely important in order to find better ways to prevent the disease from advancing. Ninety percent of cancer deaths are associated with the cancer spreading to other parts of the body. If we can prevent the tumor from spreading, we have a better chance of treating cancer."

Taken together, the findings of Louie's new study and a handful of others published in recent years show that cadmium plays a significant role in the development of breast cancer. However, Louie's research is unique in that it focuses on prolonged exposure rather than acute exposure at the cellular level. The study indicates that chronic exposure to cadmium can contribute to the development of more malignant characteristics in breast cancer cells.

"Many of us are exposed to very low levels of cadmium from the environment on a daily basis, and our research shows that even small concentrations of this metal at prolonged exposures can cause breast cancer cell growth."

Cadmium is produced mainly as a byproduct from mining, smelting and refining sulfidic ores of zinc, lead and copper. Rocks mined to produce phosphate fertilizers also contain varying amounts of cadmium. Cadmium also is found in rechargeable batteries and cigarette smoke. Cadmium enters the body through consumption of contaminated food, water or inhalation of cigarette smoke.

Louie's preliminary data show an increase in the ability of breast cancer cells to migrate and invade through the extracellular matrix with prolonged cadmium exposure. The extracellular matrix is the outer barrier of an organ or tissue. Increased invasive and migration abilities are characteristic of cancer cells' ability to spread. Louie discovered that MCF-7 cells chronically exposed to cadmium express higher levels of SDF-1, a protein associated with tumor invasion and metastasis.

How specific proteins, including SDF-1, contribute to the aggressive characteristics of the cadmium exposed cells requires further research, and understanding their role in cadmium-induced carcinogenesis will provide further insights to how heavy metals contribute to breast cancer progression.

Louie's research is funded by the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health.

Nokia's released a new commercial that it says is shot entirely using an 808 PureView. Whilst it's clear the company's hired a coterie of models, professional photographers and a world-class lighting rig, it's still a great indication of what the technology can do in the right hands. Head on past the break to see the results for yourself and then catch yourself seriously weighing up buying a Symbian phone for your next handset, just like we are.

Samsung Galaxy S Aviator (U.S. Cellular)

U.S. Cellular's 4G LTE network may be brand new, but the $99.99 Samsung Galaxy S Aviator looks and feels an awful lot like last year's Samsung Droid Charge?($99.99, 4 stars) for Verizon Wireless. That's not a bad thing: the Aviator has a sharp, beautiful display, good call quality, and a great camera and camcorder. It's also the only smartphone?available to tap into U.S. Cellular's 4G LTE network. It's a good choice if you live in an LTE coverage area and want in right now, but the carrier offers better options if you stick with 3G.

Physical Design and Call Quality
As previously mentioned, the Aviator bears a close resemblance to the Samsung Droid Charge. Like the Charge, it measures 5.1 by 2.6 by .5 inches (HWD) and weighs 5 ounces. The area beneath the display dips down into a slightly pointed chin shape, and features four physical function keys. The display itself is another lovely 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen from Samsung. At 800-by-480-pixels, it is lower resolution than the 960-by-540 display on the?Motorola Electrify?($129.99, 4.5 stars), but the colors on Super AMOLED Plus are richer. Typing on the on-screen QWERTY keyboard feels fine in both portrait and landscape modes, and dialing phone numbers is fast.

The Aviator is a dual-band EV-DO Rev A (800/1900 MHz) and 4G LTE device with 802.11b /g/n Wi-Fi.?Voice quality is a strong point. Reception is solid, and calls sound clear and full in the phone's earpiece. The speakerphone also sounds good and is just loud enough to use outdoors. Calls made with the phone sound clear and easy to understand, with decent noise cancellation. Calls also sounded good and voice dialing worked well over a?Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset ($129, 4.5 stars). Battery life over 3G was average, at 6 hours and 28 minutes of talk time.

4G LTE
U.S. Cellular was the winner for customer satisfaction in our most recent Readers' Choice survey, and is the seventh-largest carrier in the nation, with about six million customers in 26 states. The carrier roams on Verizon and Sprint, offering nationwide 3G coverage when outside of its native coverage area.

The carrier's new LTE network currently covers six regions: Madison-Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Lawton-Wichita Falls, Texas/Oklahoma; Bangor-Portland and Presque Isle-Houlton, Maine; rural eastern North Carolina; and metropolitan Iowa. While it's the only LTE carrier in Maine right now, at least part of all of those other areas are covered by Verizon's 4G LTE. The carrier plans to expand throughout 2012 and 2013.

We haven't yet tested U.S. Cellular's 4G network, and the carrier isn't quoting speeds publicly. We're expecting fast LTE speeds like the ones we've seen on Verizon, as opposed to the more-like-3G speeds on MetroPCS, because of U.S. Cellular's comfortable spectrum position. That can mean average download speeds around 9.5Mbps, like we saw in our?Fastest Mobile Networks tests.?

4G plans for the Aviator cost the same as 3G plans for U.S. Cellular's other devices; that's a good thing. You can get 450 minutes of voice calls, unlimited texting, and 5GB of 4G data for $79.99 per month. That same plan on Verizon costs $89.99 per month, and you only get 2GB of data (or 4GB, for a limited time). An additional $25 per month allows you to use the Aviator as a mobile hotspot, and share its 4G connection with other devices, like a laptop or tablet, though you're pooling from the same 5GB of data.

Google execs, director Cameron in space venture

SAN FRANCISCO | Fri Apr 20, 2012 8:52pm EDT

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt and billionaire co-founder Larry Page have teamed up with "Avatar" director James Cameron and other investors to back an ambitious space exploration and natural resources venture, details of which will be unveiled next week.

The fledgling company, called Planetary Resources, will be unveiled at a Tuesday news conference at the Museum of Flight in Seattle, according to a press release issued this week.

Aside from naming some of the company's high-profile backers, the press release disclosed tantalizingly few details, saying only that the company will combine the sectors of "space exploration and natural resources" in a venture that could add "trillions of dollars to the global GDP." The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that Planetary Resources will explore the feasibility of mining natural resources from asteroids, a decades-old concept.

"This innovative start-up will create a new industry and a new definition of 'natural resources,'" according to the press release.

Planetary Resource was co-founded by Eric Anderson, a former NASA Mars mission manager, and Peter Diamandis, the commercial space entrepreneur behind the X-Prize, a competition that offered $10 million to a group that launched a reusable manned spacecraft. Other notable investors include Charles Simonyi, a former top executive at Microsoft, and K. Ram Shriram, a Google director.

The venture will be the latest foray into the far-flung for Cameron, who dived last month in a mini-submarine to the deepest spot in the Mariana Trench. The plot of his 2009 science fiction blockbuster film, "Avatar," concerned resource mining on alien planets.

What is The Point of a Dissertation?

Cast your mind back to when you started your degree? okay; now think about the word count of your essays. They were small, weren?t they? About 2,000 words? Now think about your second year? your workload increased from your first year, didn?t it? So naturally, in your final year, your workload should trump that of your first year, which is the natural progression of any degree. You have been studying your degree, for a number of years and in order to graduate, you must be able to convince your university that you can demonstrate authority over a topic of your choice. Just think of your dissertation as an extended essay, which is different from a thesis. Many people get these two terms confused, a thesis is your idea, and the dissertation is the document that supports your thesis. A dissertation should show that you have a throughout grasp of the appropriate techniques and methodologies ? this is what your degree, undergraduate or postgraduate has been building up to.

Alas, do not be daunted by your word-count, as most people who have written a dissertation will agree that during the writing and editing process, they could have done with more words.

In the overall scope of the things, writing a dissertation takes time, organisation, and skills all of which are transferrable skills that will enable you to find work.

You have spent weeks in a library trawling through books, and you have spent countless hours analysing data that you collected from a questionnaire you developed. From there you structured your argument accordingly, the introduction, body, and conclusion are methodically worked out, and from there you editing and editing and editing. Do not think that your dissertation is a waste of time, as none of these skills you develop along the road to completion are arbitrary, and they will help you to find employment in your field, another field, or to continue as a postgraduate or research student. Dissertations give you training in research, surveying, analysing, and reviewing, in addition to a communication skills such as writing; so I suppose you could say that the process of research and writing a dissertation provides you with positive life skills.

A dissertation is your chance to show those academics how an intelligent and clever you are, and improve your prospects of getting a job after you graduate; proofreading services will help you along your way.
