Not all of that infrastructure was physical: we also invested in all the knowledge in the libraries of those universities and the know-how in the heads of all the people who attended them, weights and measures standards so any 10-32 machine screw will fit the hole tapped with any 10-32 tap, all the music, books and movies, and more.? ?More? especially included a legal system that worked well enough to get those books written and songs played, at least as long as they had to be packaged in something that could be locked up in a room.

The roads are potholed and congested, the electric grid doesn?t connect to where we need to collect energy and too stupid to do what it should, the universities are turning away people who want to learn (my main spring course roster is 20% waitlist and no, a bigger room won?t solve the problem)?? But the most important of these failures, triggered by our ability to encode information as bits instead of ink, is the collapse of the information distribution system, and Aaron Swartz is an appropriate symbol of almost everything that?s wrong with it.? Today I got an overdue notice from the library for a paper book. What?s next, a horsedrawn carriage ride to return it: why, in 2013, should I have to get a book back on a physical shelf for someone else to be reading it??!! Why should someone in East Gulch, with its one-day-a-week, one-room library if it has one, not be able to read it at all? Why should musicians not be able to collect a nickel for their work without selling seats for a live performance?
Now is the time to build an information infrastructure of laws and conventions that will create more value and take fewer? casualties.? First, not just a hat tip, but a sweeping bow to Lawrence Lessig [link fixed 20/I/13], Terry Fisher, Neil Netanel, and the other thinkers who have been exploring this territory over the last decades.
First, the general principles:
(1)? Honesty:? When people decide to use information, they have the right to know what that use really cost (not what it cost to make the first copy, interesting though that might be).? When people generate information, they have the right to know what value their work created or is likely to create.
(2) Privacy: People have a right to use information privately, especially with regard to government.
(3) Efficiency: Independent choices by actors in a free market, correctly informed by prices about costs and benefits (including external costs and benefits) , will almost always beat administrative or authoritarian choices.
(4) Justice: Creators have the right to be paid for their work in amounts commensurate with the value they create.? Consumers have the duty to pay for the costs their choices impose on others. Everyone has the right to free speech as broadly understood under the First Amendment.
(5) We?re all in this together: information is the collective patrimony of society. Taxes paid reflect collective benefits but not necessarily exactly the benefits received by each person.
(6) The criteria for a digital medium property regime is that it be better than what exists, and good enough. It will have irremediable flaws and deficiencies.
Short version and implications: Creators (if they wish) need to be paid proportionally to the use made of their work; consumers of digital content need to have access to digital content at marginal cost, which is in almost every case zero beyond the consumer?s time and wear and tear on her hard drive.? The big fact about consuming digital content is that doing so leaves no less for everyone else; the corollary of this fact is that charging any more than nothing to consumers is wasteful.
Here is a sketch of? the only regime known to me that respects these principles.? Nothing in it exceeds demonstrated capacities of existing technology. Note that it can coexist with conventional copyright for authors who prefer the latter.
A. Beginning in 20xx, there shall be appropriated from general funds to the copyright office the sum of $00? per year for administrative costs and implementation of the program described herein.? Beginning in 20yy,? there shall be appropriated from general funds to the copyright office the sum of $000? annually to be disbursed as ?use-scaled? royalties as provided in the following titles.
B. Any legal person wishing to receive use-scaled royalties for creative work in digital form as author shall place with the copyright office a fair copy of the text, image, recording, etc. and identification sufficient to direct annual royalty payments.? The copyright office shall retain copies and distribute royalties for 00 years after a work is first registered, and inform registrants of attempts to register works already in the system.
C. Any device with access to the internet shall be equipped with software distributed and certified by the copyright office that will, whenever a file is opened:
a. ?Hashcode? or otherwise extract sufficient information to identify the work contained .
b. Transmit the code created under C.a ,? but not who or what opened the file, to the copyright office.? One such transmission of code is a use of that work.
c. Transmission of the file containing a work between devices or persons shall not be a use.
D. The copyright office shall accumulate annually a count of uses for each registered work.? Annual royalties shall be distributed in proportion to the fraction of uses recorded for? each work, divided by the total of uses for all registered works.? Total royalties may be separated into such separate funds for different media [for example, video/movie royalties may result in different per-use payments than music or text] as Congress may from time to time determine.
The copyright office may use statistical sampling techniques to determine the allocation of royalties where appropriate, balancing precision and accuracy of result against administrative cost.
E. The copyright office shall not trace the origin of, nor keep any record of, the individual or device that opened a file thus identified, nor cooperate with any law enforcement or security agency with regard to its records of use.
F. The copyright office shall perform the legal, computer science, and related research required to implement the actions described herein internally and/or by contract as the Register of Copyright may determine.
G. Any person may copy, distribute, read/listen to/watch/mashup/etc., any work registered for use-based royalties without limit of time or place.
H. No provision herein shall replace or nullify any rights granted authors and their assigns under existing copyright law, except that a work in which copyright is claimed shall not be admissible for registration for use-based royalties. Rightful owners of existing copyright who register their works for use-based royalties transfer their rights to the public domain as per G above.
I. Rights to use-based royalties are transferable? among legal persons with notice to the copyright office.

Postponement of NuvaRing Litigation Opens Door for New Plaintiffs ...

The extension opens the window for more lawsuits to be filed. But even though a settlement might be closer, it will be months if not years before settlement amounts are established and disbursed. NuvaRing, the first vaginal hormonal contraceptive device, was developed by Organon BioSciences, the Dutch chemical giant Akzo-Nobel?s human and animal health business. The flexible plastic ring releases a low dose of etonogestrel (synthetic progestin) and estrogen (ethinyl estradiol) over three weeks.

• 2001: The FDA approved NuvaRing?which is marketed as a simpler and healthier alternative to a daily birth control pill?for use in the U.S.
• 2007: Schering-Plough purchases Organon for $14.4 billion.
• Beginning in May 2007: Complaints are filed in various jurisdictions asserting claims over the marketing and sale of NuvaRing.
• November 2009: Schering Plough completes its $4.1 billion merger with Merck.
• 2009: The British Medical Journal publishes two studies finding that women taking third- and fourth-generation progestins are almost twice as likely to develop blood clots as those taking second-generation oral contraceptives. First-generation birth control pills, developed in the 1960s, contained high levels of estrogen and carried a nine-fold increased risk of blood clots. Second-generation pills, developed in the 1970s, dramatically decreased blood-clot risks by combining lower doses of estrogen with the synthetic hormone progestin. NuvaRing contains a third-generation?progestin, etonogestrel, which was developed to better control side effects like facial hair and acne.
• 2010: More than 5.5 million NuvaRing prescriptions are written in the U.S. NuvaRing generates $559 million in international sales.
• October 2011: An FDA-funded study finds that of 800,000 American women using some form of birth control between 2001 and 2008, NuvaRing users had a 56 percent increased risk of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism over women using second-generation birth control pills.
• May 2012: A Danish study published in the British Medical Journal reports that NuvaRing users had a 6.5 times higher risk of developing a serious blood clot compared to women who did not use any form of hormonal birth control; and a 90 percent higher risk of experiencing a dangerous blood clot than women taking combined oral contraceptives containing older forms of female hormones.
• 2012: NuvaRing?s product information pamphlet claims that other studies have not shown any increased risk of blood clots in NuvaRing users over second-generation users.
• Through the middle of 2012, the FDA receives 4,974 Adverse Event reports from NuvaRing users.
• Today: Approximately 1.5 million women worldwide currently use NuvaRing which has not been recalled from the U.S. market.

The short answer is no, in fact it's much better than you would ever have thought, and we'll explain why shortly. Going back to the camera itself, it looks a little like the innards of those security cameras you find in government buildings etc that peer at you ominously. However, in this case, the three lenses have color detail around them which makes them look anything but sinister, and the circular base section might look a little large, but in fact it's light in the hand -- and actually helps it sit quite comfortably atop a helmet.

In 360 video mode the advertised resolution is up to 2,048 x 1,024. In photo mode you'll get single shot, burst and time-lapse modes with a top resolution of 4,096 x 2,048. A touchscreen interface isn't all that great if you enjoy using your Android phone as a portable retro game arcade. If you have an old Game Boy lying around and a Wiimote, you can combine those to make your own hardware controller for your phone.

With the use of the "Wii Controller IME" App on the Play App store, this retro controller will really control anything which lets you use the android touch keyboard as input. Although i've only tried with a SNES emulator, in theory you should be able to play and do all kinds of things with the Gameboy's buttons. The project is essentially a gutted Game Boy with a Wii remote inside. ... The limitation is really the support of your device with the Wiimote App. Technically you could control your wii with the Gameboy minus some functionallity.

Ford Motor Company Sees Open Source

Ford today announced the launch of its OpenXC vehicle application research platform. Open-source hardware and software toolkits are now available to anybody who?s interested in building hardware and on the OpenXC platform. It is a joint effort with BugLabs (what a great name!).

The launch of OpenXC marks the second developer platform to be offered by Ford, following this week?s announcement of its first?software developer program, which makes the SYNC? AppLink? API available for the creation of smartphone apps that can be controlled inside the car using your voice. See the post from my colleague Kelly Clay to the left.

While AppLink is available in Ford vehicles now, OpenXC is focused on the future as an open-source hardware and software platform developed by Ford Research and Innovation to unleash the power of the open-source hacker community to explore what can be done with vehicle data.

This reminds me of my friend, Doyle Maleche, a serious hacker/maker, who built a device/app for Android to control your vehicle. Currently, it works with GM vehicles, but he and his team are tweaking it to make it available on other vehicles. It lets you start your vehicle from your smartphone, set off the alarm (emergencies), turn on lights, and more. He has a short video of it on the website: obdcanex.?OBDLink MX?works with all 1996 & newer model year cars and light trucks sold in the U.S., including all American, European, and Asian vehicles. If you live outside the U.S., most newer non-U.S. vehicles are compliant with the OBDII standards.

The hardware module provides real-time access to parameters like the vehicle sensors, GPS receiver and vehicle speed. • User experience ? Connectivity is an increasingly important part of the total user experience while driving. Finding new ways to reduce stress and keep the driver informed can make driving a more pleasant experience

Early in 2012 Ford shipped the first OpenXC beta toolkits to universities such as the?University of Michigan,?MIT,?Stanford?University?and?HCL Technologies?in India. Since that time, OSIsoft has?sponsored a hackathon?to create an application using vehicle data from OpenXC in combination with its enterprise data analytics platform.

Many Jordanians see the latter as either the government caving to business interests ? a price floor made it difficult for manufacturers to compete ? or an effort to distract voters from their dissatisfaction with the government as they prepare to go to the polls. A slash in government fuel subsidies late last year is hitting Jordanians hard in the pocketbook; a gas canister that used to cost 6.5 dinars now costs 10 (about $14).

The painful hike in cooking and heating gas took effect late last year, triggering days of demonstrations and prompting speculation that the Hashemite Kingdom might succumb to the popular unrest that upended governments in Egypt, Syria, and Libya, although those concerns did not materialize.

In what many see as an effort to placate angry, cash-strapped voters, last month the government approved lowering the minimum price of cigarettes, which are publicly regulated, to help manufacturers better compete with cigarettes smuggled over the border from Syria. The price for a pack of domestically made Marlboros dropped by 20 percent in December, from 1.8 Jordanian dinars to 1.4, and by the first week in January the prices of all locally made cigarettes had been slashed, reversing a trend from recent years in which Jordan's government raised taxes on cigarettes. A comparable pack of smuggled Syrian cigarettes costs 2.25 dinars.

Not everyone is buying it.

"Some people are suckers for that, you know? The economy is bad," says Madian Al Jazeera, the owner of Books@Cafe, a bar and bookstore where business is down as much as 40 percent since the gas price hikes, as Jordanians tighten their budgets.?"Look around. No one is smiling. You don?t see the smiles, you see the spite in the street. People are on edge."

The government decision has also raised the hackles of the health ministry and other public health advocates for promoting smoking. The ministry opposed the decision on the grounds that it violated a World Health Organization convention on tobacco control.

Gas prices crowd out politics

The unpopular gas price hikes were adopted at the request of the International Monetary Fund, which made them a condition for the Jordanian government to receive $2 billion in IMF aid to avert an economic collapse.?

The gene points the way to a gene therapy

Scientists observed that blocking the expression of the gene TRIP-Br2 in mice protects them against obesity and insulin resistance. The study shows that the gene modulates fat storage by regulating energy expenditure and lipolysis, the process which transforms fat into lipids for the body's energy consumption. If the gene expression is blocked, the mice increase their lipolysis and their energy expenditure, thus reducing their obesity.

Obesity is the result of an alteration in the processes that regulate food absorption and energy production. This alteration tips the balance towards excessive storage of fat. According to the researchers, understanding the regulation of the factors that control the storage, mobilisation and use of excess energy in fat cells (the adipocytes) can lead to the development of therapies for obesity and its related illnesses, such as type 2 diabetes.

In the words of Cristina Mallol, a researcher at the Universitat Autnoma de Barcelona and co-author of the study: "The protection of mice with no expression of the gene TRIP-Br2, and its selective elevation in the visceral fat of humans point the way to a future gene therapy to counteract obesity, insulin resistance and excess lipids in the blood".

2nd Winehouse inquest held after coroner glitch

LONDON (AP) ? A British court is holding a second inquest into the death of Amy Winehouse after the coroner who ruled the singer had drunk herself to death was found to lack the proper qualifications.

The soul singer was found dead at her London home in July 2011 at the age of 27. An inquest later that year found that the star had died from accidental alcohol poisoning.

The coroner later resigned after her qualifications were questioned. She had been hired by her husband, the senior coroner for inner north London. But she had not been a registered lawyer in Britain for five years as required.

The family has said Tuesday's hearing at St. Pancras Coroner's Court is expected to reach the same conclusion about the cause of death.

The PAL-V ONE, which looks like a cross between a three-wheeler and a helicopter, uses a rear-mounted propeller to take off and a free-spinning rotor on top for lift. Made by PAL-V in the Netherlands, it needs about 200 meters to take off and costs nearly $300,000. If the price comes down and a reasonable way can be found to keep skyborne vehicles separated, we may at last see a world that is somewhat akin to the one depicted in the futuristic cartoon.

Puppy Bowl is back - now with hedgehogs

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Are you ready for some necessary ruff-ness? Good, because Puppy Bowl IX is officially a go.

Animal Planet has confirmed that its cherished annual tradition, Puppy Bowl, is back on for another round of gridiron thrills and canine cuteness.

This year's Puppy Bowl will take place February 3 - for those who don't follow non-puppy sports, that's Super Bowl Sunday - from 3 to 5 p.m., at the newly christened Geico Stadium, with 63 pooches vying for glory on the field.

The latest incarnation of the animal kingdom's most-anticipated sporting event is receiving a few tweaks this year. In a first for the nine-year-old Puppy Bowl, the battling canines will be encouraged from the sidelines by a squadron of hedgehog cheerleaders. In another first, new Puppy Cam technology will put viewers on the field with "in-your-face" shots of snouts, tails and paws, while an off-field camera will capture substitutes warming up for the game in a special puppy hot tub. (Three words: underwater puppy shots.)

As always, the game will feature the Kitty Half-Time Show, where kittens will provide a break from the action on the field with an array of acrobatics and gymnastics, culminating in a confetti shower. (Because, really, do you expect any surprises from Beyonce's half-time show this year?)

An early look at Intel's 'Lexington' platform: Atom, tailored for emerging markets

Good morning, kids! We're here at Intel's CES booth, where the company is showing off a low-end reference smartphone running the Atom Z2420 processor, which is part of the new "Lexington" family of chips tailored for emerging markets. We learned yesterday that three manufactures are on board, with Acer being the biggest name.

Curiously, though, the handset we just found is completely unmarked, and Intel won't say who makes it. It also won't share any specs other than the processor, though we already know what the platform is capable of: up to 1.2GHz of clock speed, 1080p video at 30 fps, HSPA+ connectivity and, support for dual 5MP / 1.3MP cameras. Whatever this phone is, it won't do more than that. Still, despite not knowing much, we wanted to give you a look at this device anyway because we thought it would be a good opportunity to give you some early impressions of the performance. MOBILE, Ala. (AP) ? Arkansas State's offense was held in check Sunday night after piling up big numbers this season. It was the defense that led the Red Wolves to a breakthrough victory.

Ryan Aplin threw for 213 yards and a touchdown, J.D. McKissic caught 11 passes for 113 yards and Arkansas State edged No. 25 Kent State 17-13 to win the GoDaddy.com Bowl.

Arkansas State's usually prolific offense struggled against Kent State, but the consistent Aplin-to-McKissic connection and a stingy defense was enough to help the Red Wolves (10-3) to their first bowl win since joining the Football Bowl Subdivision in 1992.

Kent State (11-3) was driving late in the game when quarterback Spencer Keith tried to scramble on fourth down and was stopped a few yards short of the marker with 52 seconds left. Linebacker Qushaun Lee made the shoestring tackle for the Red Wolves and finished with a team-leading 13 stops.

"That was a good one," Arkansas State interim coach John Thompson said. "Our guys stepped up with a minute to go. We really needed a play, and our guys made one. It wasn't anything except for ballplayers. It was anything special at all. We just made plays."

Darrell Hazell roamed the Kent State sideline one more time in the Golden Flashes' first bowl game since 1972. He is leaving the program to take over at Purdue.

Thompson, a veteran defensive coordinator, coached the Red Wolves after Gus Malzahn left to take the Auburn job last month. It was the second straight season Arkansas State had to play its bowl game without the coach that led it to a Sun Belt championship ? Hugh Freeze left for Mississippi in 2011 before last year's GoDaddy.com Bowl, which the Red Wolves lost 38-20 to Northern Illinois.

The results were much better this time ? and the defensive-minded Thompson was especially pleased with that side of the ball.

Arkansas State's offense was dominant during the last half of the regular season, averaging more than 41 points during a seven-game winning streak.

But the Red Wolves had to rely on their defense in this one while the offense slowly warmed up. Kent State took a 7-0 lead on Dri Archer's 16-yard touchdown run and the margin could have been worse, but Arkansas State linebacker Nathan Herrold picked off a tipped pass in the end zone to end a promising drive for the Golden Flashes.

David Oku rushed for a tying 10-yard touchdown with 5:40 remaining in the second quarter, and then Aplin hit McKissic for a 31-yard touchdown minutes later to make it 14-7.

"Our offense did exactly what it was supposed to do," Thompson said. "They did a great job. Ryan Aplin took some shots ? I guess I can say it now ? some unnecessary shots that weren't good. But our defense ? we've got men over there. Grown men."

Kent State responded with a 42-yard field goal by Freddy Cortez just before halftime. The teams traded field goals in the third quarter, but neither team could score in the fourth.

The Golden Flashes put together one last drive in the final minutes, with Keith completing a clutch 15-yard pass over the middle on fourth down with less than two minutes remaining. He was headed for another fourth-down conversion just four plays later, but was tripped up on a scramble deep in Arkansas State territory. The Red Wolves then began to celebrate on their sideline.

"I saw their defense drop back really fast, and I thought I had enough room to get the first down," Keith said. "But they were able to get me on the ankle."

It was a disappointing end to an otherwise breakthrough season for Kent State, which set a school record with 11 victories, including a 10-game winning streak that lasted nearly three months. But they dropped their last two games, including a 44-37 double-overtime loss to Northern Illinois on Nov. 30 in the Mid-American Conference championship.

One reason Kent State was able to win 11 games was a dynamic rushing attack that averaged more than 250 yards per game. But the duo of Archer and Trayion Durham didn't have a particularly good game against the Red Wolves.

Archer, who missed much of the second half with an apparent injury, led the Golden Flashes with 77 yards rushing while Durham added 68.

Aplin completed 21 of 30 passes in his final college game. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound senior owns nearly every school passing record and is the Sun Belt two-time player of the year.

This wasn't one of his most spectacular games, but he was consistent, made very few mistakes and had no turnovers.

That was no small feat against Kent State, which led the nation with 38 takeaways coming into the game. The Golden Flashes couldn't get one against the Red Wolves.

"That was a huge part of our game plan," Aplin said. "We knew we couldn't afford to give them momentum. Our guys did a great job taking care of the ball and giving our defense a chance to help us win."

Psychological common ground could ease tensions among those with different religious beliefs

Jan. 7, 2013 ? Understanding how thoughts of mortality influence individuals' beliefs sheds light on the commonalities among different groups' motivations and could help ease tensions between opposing viewpoints, according to University of Missouri experiments that tested the relationship between awareness of death and belief in a higher power. The study found that thoughts of death increased atheists, Christians, Muslims and agnostics conviction in their own world views. For example, contrary to the wartime aphorism that there are no atheists in foxholes, thoughts of death did not cause atheists to express belief in a deity.

"Our study suggests that atheists' and religious believers' world views have the same practical goal," said Kenneth Vail, lead author and doctoral student in psychological science in MU's College of Arts and Science. "Both groups seek a coherent world view to manage the fear of death and link themselves to a greater and immortal entity, such as a supreme being, scientific progress or a nation. If people were more aware of this psychological similarity, perhaps there might be more understanding and less conflict among groups with different beliefs."

His research suggests that morbid imagery, such as news headlines or caricatures of enemies in war propaganda, can reinforce nationalistic and/or religious ideals by keeping death on the mind and subconsciously encouraging denial of opposing ideologies. This research suggests that religious symbols and stories involving death, such as the crucifix, function psychologically to remind the faithful of mortality and subconsciously reinforce one particular world view to the exclusion of others.

For the study, Vail and his colleagues conducted a series of three experiments by first encouraging thoughts of death in study participants and analyzing their responses to a questionnaire. The first experiment examined Christians and atheists in the United States. The results suggested awareness of death in Christians increased their belief in God and denial of other traditions. Atheists also continued to adhere to their world views, although no increase in denial of other philosophies was observable because atheists by definition started with no belief in any religious traditions.

The second experiment, conducted in Iran, found that Muslims reacted similarly to Christians when they were thinking about their own mortality. A third trial observed agnostics and found that thoughts of death tended to increase their belief in a higher power. However, unlike Christians and Muslims, they did not increase their denial of Buddha, God, Jesus or Allah. Instead agnostics increased acceptance of all of those world views.

"In our study, individuals' minds appeared to rally around certain personal guiding concepts when faced with fear of death," said Vail. "Agnostics seemed to hedge their spiritual bets. They believed more firmly in a higher power. Yet at the same time, they expressed continued belief that the specific nature of that power was beyond human knowledge."

The study, "Exploring the Existential Function of Religious and Supernatural Agent Beliefs Among Christians, Muslims, Atheists and Agnostics," was published in the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin. Co-authors were Jamie Arndt, MU professor of psychological sciences, and Abdolhossein Abdollahi of the Islamic Azad University in Iran.

HOLLIS ? Aaron Hill is not your average seventh-grader.

He spends his days taking free online courses from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and other universities learning about computer programming. He researched and bought a computer the size of a credit card early last year, and in November, he added ?international contest winner? to his resume.

Aaron, 12, a student at Hollis Brookline Middle School, won the computer programming contest, sponsored by the Raspberry Pi Foundation, the makers of the tiny computer, for writing a program, which he named ?PySnap,? for doing time-lapse photography using the Raspberry Pi.

?I was really excited when I found out I won,? he said.

Aaron has been interested in computers and technology for as long as he can remember. When he was 8, he got his ham radio license. And when he was 10, he started learning computer programming, looking up online tutorials about the programming and teaching himself how to do it.

?He?s always been a little precocious,? his father, Lee Hill, said, laughing, at the family?s Hollis home.

It was when Aaron was looking around for more programming tips that he discovered the Raspberry Pi. He researched the tiny computer and bought one online.

He was on the foundation?s website when he learned about the programming competition, a mere two weeks before it was ending. He decided to enter, and took a suggestion from his family to create turn the computer into a time-lapse camera ? all before he even received his own Raspberry Pi.

He had to test the program on his laptop and said he wasn?t sure it would even work properly when he submitted it to the competition.

The program works by hooking the Raspberry Pi up to a webcam. The program then allows the user to program the camera to take a picture at a certain time every day, week, month or year. The images are saved, and can be looked at in sequence, to see how the scene has changed over time.

He found on Thanksgiving morning that his program had won.

?I just woke up and was going to do some programming and I noticed on the Raspberry Pi blog that there was a new post about contest winners,? Aaron said. ?Then I saw it was me.?

Lee Hill and Aaron?s mother, Ellen Groh, said they heard their son scream and thought he was hurt, until he starting running around the house yelling, ?I won! I won!?

Aaron is humble about his accomplishments so far, slightly embarrassed even, for the attention he has received over the contest win, but said he?s happy that his program was selected.

He received $1,000 for winning, and said he plans to save the money for programming work, or maybe school, later in life.

He said he?s too young to really know what he wants to do for a career, but that he?s sure it will somehow involve computer programming.

It?s a passion that his friends don?t really understand or share, but one that he is committed to.

In addition to winning the Raspberry Pi competition, Aaron has also worked with his family?s church to design an electronic ?wall? to display parishioners? prayers and thoughts during a ceremony. The program, which allows users to text a message to a phone number and display their message on the screen, was first tested out around Thanksgiving.

And Aaron said he hopes to enter more contests in the future.

He has plenty of ideas for computer programs and even applications for smartphones, including one that would allow the user to manage multiple computers, installing updates and doing other maintenance work, from their cell phone.

For now, however, he?s focusing on his online programming courses, hoping to perfect his craft before his next competition.

Luckily, he has his engineer father around to help with some of the tougher math problems in the course.

?The programming is easy for him, it?s the college level math that?s difficult,? Hill said, laughing.
