A touchscreen interface isn't all that great if you enjoy using your Android phone as a portable retro game arcade. If you have an old Game Boy lying around and a Wiimote, you can combine those to make your own hardware controller for your phone.
Instructables user alpinedelta offers this interesting solution. The Wii remote is used for the Bluetooth interface in the Game Boy shell:
With the use of the "Wii Controller IME" App on the Play App store, this retro controller will really control anything which lets you use the android touch keyboard as input. Although i've only tried with a SNES emulator, in theory you should be able to play and do all kinds of things with the Gameboy's buttons. The project is essentially a gutted Game Boy with a Wii remote inside. ... The limitation is really the support of your device with the Wiimote App. Technically you could control your wii with the Gameboy minus some functionallity.

Ford today announced the launch of its OpenXC vehicle application research platform. Open-source hardware and software toolkits are now available to anybody who?s interested in building hardware and on the OpenXC platform. It is a joint effort with BugLabs (what a great name!).
The launch of OpenXC marks the second developer platform to be offered by Ford, following this week?s announcement of its first?software developer program, which makes the SYNC? AppLink? API available for the creation of smartphone apps that can be controlled inside the car using your voice. See the post from my colleague Kelly Clay to the left.
While AppLink is available in Ford vehicles now, OpenXC is focused on the future as an open-source hardware and software platform developed by Ford Research and Innovation to unleash the power of the open-source hacker community to explore what can be done with vehicle data.
This reminds me of my friend, Doyle Maleche, a serious hacker/maker, who built a device/app for Android to control your vehicle. Currently, it works with GM vehicles, but he and his team are tweaking it to make it available on other vehicles. It lets you start your vehicle from your smartphone, set off the alarm (emergencies), turn on lights, and more. He has a short video of it on the website: obdcanex.?OBDLink MX?works with all 1996 & newer model year cars and light trucks sold in the U.S., including all American, European, and Asian vehicles. If you live outside the U.S., most newer non-U.S. vehicles are compliant with the OBDII standards.

The OpenXC kit includes a vehicle interface module based on the popular?Arduino?platform developers can use to read data from the vehicle?s internal communications network. The hardware module provides real-time access to parameters like the vehicle sensors, GPS receiver and vehicle speed. The hardware module is connected to a smartphone or tablet on which apps can be written to consume and use these data.

User experience ? Connectivity is an increasingly important part of the total user experience while driving. Finding new ways to reduce stress and keep the driver informed can make driving a more pleasant experience
Early in 2012 Ford shipped the first OpenXC beta toolkits to universities such as the?University of Michigan,?MIT,?Stanford?University?and?HCL Technologies?in India. Since that time, OSIsoft has?sponsored a hackathon?to create an application using vehicle data from OpenXC in combination with its enterprise data analytics platform.

Jordan is less than two weeks away from a parliamentary election, but the vote has been overshadowed by the government's recent fuel price hikes and decision to lower cigarette prices.

Many Jordanians see the latter as either the government caving to business interests ? a price floor made it difficult for manufacturers to compete ? or an effort to distract voters from their dissatisfaction with the government as they prepare to go to the polls. A slash in government fuel subsidies late last year is hitting Jordanians hard in the pocketbook; a gas canister that used to cost 6.5 dinars now costs 10 (about $14).
The painful hike in cooking and heating gas took effect late last year, triggering days of demonstrations and prompting speculation that the Hashemite Kingdom might succumb to the popular unrest that upended governments in Egypt, Syria, and Libya, although those concerns did not materialize.
In what many see as an effort to placate angry, cash-strapped voters, last month the government approved lowering the minimum price of cigarettes, which are publicly regulated, to help manufacturers better compete with cigarettes smuggled over the border from Syria. The price for a pack of domestically made Marlboros dropped by 20 percent in December, from 1.8 Jordanian dinars to 1.4, and by the first week in January the prices of all locally made cigarettes had been slashed, reversing a trend from recent years in which Jordan's government raised taxes on cigarettes. A comparable pack of smuggled Syrian cigarettes costs 2.25 dinars.
Not everyone is buying it.
"Some people are suckers for that, you know? The economy is bad," says Madian Al Jazeera, the owner of Books@Cafe, a bar and bookstore where business is down as much as 40 percent since the gas price hikes, as Jordanians tighten their budgets.?"Look around. No one is smiling. You don?t see the smiles, you see the spite in the street. People are on edge."
The government decision has also raised the hackles of the health ministry and other public health advocates for promoting smoking. The ministry opposed the decision on the grounds that it violated a World Health Organization convention on tobacco control.
Gas prices crowd out politics
The unpopular gas price hikes were adopted at the request of the International Monetary Fund, which made them a condition for the Jordanian government to receive $2 billion in IMF aid to avert an economic collapse.?

The gene points the way to a gene therapy
Scientists observed that blocking the expression of the gene TRIP-Br2 in mice protects them against obesity and insulin resistance. The study shows that the gene modulates fat storage by regulating energy expenditure and lipolysis, the process which transforms fat into lipids for the body's energy consumption. If the gene expression is blocked, the mice increase their lipolysis and their energy expenditure, thus reducing their obesity.
Obesity is the result of an alteration in the processes that regulate food absorption and energy production. This alteration tips the balance towards excessive storage of fat. According to the researchers, understanding the regulation of the factors that control the storage, mobilisation and use of excess energy in fat cells (the adipocytes) can lead to the development of therapies for obesity and its related illnesses, such as type 2 diabetes.
In the words of Cristina Mallol, a researcher at the Universitat Autnoma de Barcelona and co-author of the study: "The protection of mice with no expression of the gene TRIP-Br2, and its selective elevation in the visceral fat of humans point the way to a future gene therapy to counteract obesity, insulin resistance and excess lipids in the blood".

LONDON (AP) ? A British court is holding a second inquest into the death of Amy Winehouse after the coroner who ruled the singer had drunk herself to death was found to lack the proper qualifications.
The soul singer was found dead at her London home in July 2011 at the age of 27. An inquest later that year found that the star had died from accidental alcohol poisoning.
The coroner later resigned after her qualifications were questioned. She had been hired by her husband, the senior coroner for inner north London. But she had not been a registered lawyer in Britain for five years as required.
The family has said Tuesday's hearing at St. Pancras Coroner's Court is expected to reach the same conclusion about the cause of death.
