Israel returns bodies of Egypt attackers: military

Israel has returned to Egypt the bodies of "between six and eight" gunmen involved in a deadly attack in northern Sinai who then forced their way over the Israeli border, a military spokesman said on Tuesday.

Speaking to AFP, he said that some of the bodies had been so badly torn apart by explosives that it was impossible to be sure how many there were.

"There were between six and eight bodies," he said. "One or more of the terrorists had explosives on them and they exploded. For now it's unclear how many terrorists there were."

The remains were sent back overnight, the military said.

In Sunday's attack, 35 gunmen in Bedouin clothing opened fire on an Egyptian border post, killing 16, before crossing into the Jewish state in an armoured vehicle and an explosives-laden pickup truck, Egyptian officials said.

Israel initially said its troops killed five gunmen, with the armoured vehicle destroyed by helicopter fire.

Media reports said other remains were recovered from the pickup truck which blew up as it tried to negotiate barriers at the border crossing.

Egypt also closed until further notice its Rafah crossing with the Gaza Strip, the territory's only access to the outside world that is not controlled by Israel.

The Israeli army said in a statement that the Kerem Shalom crossing, which lies on the border of Israel, Egypt and Gaza and where the gunmen breached the fence, had been reopened on Tuesday morning.

Fidelity: 401(k) average balance slips 2 pct in 2Q

BOSTON (AP) ? Workers continued to stash more money in their 401(k) plans in the second quarter, but the stock market's modest decline left them slightly further behind in reaching their savings goals.

Fidelity Investments, the nation's largest 401(k) administrator, said on Thursday that the average balance among its nearly 12 million accountholders was $72,800 at the end of June. That's 2.4 percent less than at the end of March, and largely unchanged from last year's second-quarter average.

It didn't help that the Standard & Poor's 500 stock index fell 2.8 percent during this year's second quarter. Investors worried about the European debt crisis and slow economic growth at home.

Workers' 401(k)s are typically invested in bonds along with stocks to help reduce volatility. A broad U.S. bond market index rose nearly 2.1 percent in the second quarter, helping to offset some of the stock market's decline.

Damage to account balances also was reduced because workers set aside more from their paychecks, and employers increased 401(k) matching contributions.

The average employee contribution in the latest quarter was $1,660, up $30 from the same quarter a year ago. Their employers contributed an average $950, also up $30.

Account balances have shown healthy growth through the first half of the year due to higher contributions and strong first-quarter stock market performance. The S&P rallied nearly 13 percent in the first quarter, before surrendering a portion of that gain in the second quarter.

"The continuous contributions are helping to sustain people through these fluctuating markets," says Beth McHugh, vice president of market insights at Boston-based Fidelity.

Investment earnings and contributions can grow tax-free in an employer-sponsored 401(k) account, which is a key reason why they're a popular way to save for retirement.

The average employee contribution in Fidelity-administered 401(k) plans has remained steady at around 8 percent of annual pay for the past three years. In the latest quarter, about twice as many participants increased their contributions than decreased them.

That's consistent with the trend since the financial crisis. Balances have grown a cumulative 58 percent since early 2009, when the stock market meltdown reduced the average balance to $46,200.

Yet workers who have stayed in the market long term have found it difficult to rely solely on investment gains to build up 401(k) savings. Stocks remain about 12 percent below their historic peak in October 2007.

Over the past 10 years, about two-thirds of annual increases in account balances have been due to workers' added contributions and company matches, with one-third the result of investment returns.

For sheer infuriation value, you can't do much better than Kirby Dick's quietly scathing documentary on rape in the US military.

Dick, whose films include a revealing expose about the movie industry's film ratings board, has created yet another galvanizing call to action with "The Invisible War."

What happened to these women after the rape often shocks and disturbs them as much as the physical act itself.

It is far too difficult to watch. Which means we must.

Kirby Dick has again shown great restraint in presenting such inflammatory material, betting a clear-eyed approach will have an inflammatory effect on his audience -- and it does.

Basically, the message from the military to potential rape victims is: if you get raped, it's your own fault...

One of those documentaries that you watch both fascinated and repulsed - and one of those films that you sense just might be instrumental in helping to change an utterly unacceptable status quo.

In the end there is something to cheer about - vindication for some victims, and proof that a film can make a difference.

We learn that a military court has determined that rape is 'an occupational hazard' of serving in the military.

If this enrages you, it should.

HCM CITY ? Many exporters remain unfamiliar with export credit insurance two years after the Government introduced it, according to the Viet Nam Insurance Association.

Cash-in-advance and letters of credit are no longer competitive in the international marketplace, said Phung Dac Loc, the association?s general secretary and buying on credit was a common trend nowadays, especially in developing countries where importers usually had limited access to capital.

Export credit insurance would boost the country?s exports and help exporters reduce their risk, he said.

?Banks will provide loans to exporters without demanding collateral if they have export credit insurance, thus improving their borrowing capacity,? he said.

But despite these advantages, Vietnamese businesses were not keen on it, he told a conference in HCM City yesterday.

The total premium paid for the insurance last year was only VND1.3 billion (US$62,200), or just 0.1 per cent of the country?s total exports. The Government targets a rate of 3 per cent next year.

Businesses on the other hand said they did not need coverage because they have managed smoothly without the insurance, with some also worrying about the high cost of the insurance and its effect on their margins.

Loc said in the current situation, when most companies have high inventories, they should get export credit insurance and explore new markets.

Seven insurance companies are part of the Government?s two-year-old pilot programme ? Bao Viet, Petro Viet Nam Insurance, Bao Minh Joint Stock Corporation, Bao Viet Tokio Marine, QBE Viet Nam, Chartis Viet Nam, and United Insurance Co.

Exporters of two groups of products featuring 23 items ? including seafood, rice, coffee, fruits and vegetables, rubber, pepper, cashew nut, tea, garment and textile, footwear, electronics and computer components, ceramics, glass, iron and steel products, machinery and transport vehicles ? are encouraged to apply for the insurance.

Nguyen Hong Ha, deputy general director of the Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry?s HCM City office, said Vietnamese exporters faced high risk of losses since foreign buyers transfered money only after receiving shipments.

A loud bellow from the waterhole rocked the still night. My eyes shot open as I tried to piece together what I had just heard. I knew that this was not the typical young male belting out an objection to a mother?s disciplining tusk. I rolled over and reached for the night vision scope.

To my surprise, there were only four elephants out there, way too small a number to be a family. Our smallest family is a group of eight ? the Jewel family, led by Tiffany ? and there was no sign of Tiffany. The oldest female was swatting away the others, her eyes focused on the trough. Upon closer inspection, I could see a missing left tusk and a ?W? cutout in her left ear, barely visible without the moon that had set hours ago.

It was Wynona. Why had she shown up without the rest of the group? Had she been completely pushed out of the family? I could see that her companions were her daughter, her daughter?s quarter-size calf and Wynona?s half-size male calf. At least she wasn?t ousted on her own, as Paula from the Athlete family was.

But something else was up. I watched as Wynona marched down the trough with her trunk sweeping the water, seemingly distraught. What was she doing? What had just happened to cause her to behave like this? We had observed such behavior only when a baby had fallen into the trough, but Wynona didn?t have a baby.

Then a tiny head popped up at the end of the trough, and Wynona pulled a very wet, very new addition to the family out of the water. Wynona had a new baby! Considering that it takes about half an hour for a baby to stand and about an hour before it can keep up with its mother, her baby had to be at least an hour old to have been able to make it to the water.

As I watched Wynona carefully steering her calf back into the bush, I was filled with a sense of hope for this newborn. There was a family at the ready ? no matter the size ? that would surely be there for this little one. I thought that maybe this was a new beginning for Wynona. Maybe this was the beginnings of her own family group.

I watched these new little legs disappear into the night. Its droopy drawers conjured happy images of the babies I had watched splashing in the pan earlier in the day when the Warrior family was in. The matriarch, Left Tusker, kept an amicable ship, babies all frolicking together and socializing with the rest of the family, in stark contrast to the experience of Paula and her baby in the Athlete family. It struck me how much energy it must take by all the females to keep the heat on Paula ? not to mention the coordination involved in such a business. The matriarch, Mia, never took her eye off Paula, and if another female wasn?t terrorizing her, then Mia would chime in. Is this family playing out the meaning of survival of the fittest? Is Mia making a conscious choice to sacrifice the few for the survival of the rest of the family? Are times really that desperate out there? I?m still hoping for some kind of miraculous reconciliation so that we don?t have to witness the life-threatening ramifications of what it means to survive in the harshest of times.

This evening, I was thinking about Prince Charles?s visit in the late afternoon with two of his loyal underlings. His strikingly affiliate behavior combined with gentle reprimands continue to raise the bar, making him an increasingly likely candidate to be the next don.

A Cheshire-cat moon grinned in the west next to the tower, and a leopard called to the east. A rhino calf was mewing in the pan next to its mother, a tentative little voice that now made me think of scampering little newborn elephant steps and Wynona?s steadying trunk, reminding me that birth and strife are inextricably linked in the natural order of things.
